A faulty program install has left my CD Rom drivers
damaged (Exclamation marks in Device Manager.

System will not restore back a few days(I don't know why).

How can I install replacement drivers without being able
to use the Windows CD ?

I don't want to do a complete system re-install.

Sean, uninstall your Cdrom from Device Manager. Reboot and let WinXP
reinstall it

I tried that it just came back with the same message
i.e. "The drivers for this device are missing or damaged",

Is there not a source for Windows XP drivers alone? The
CD manuals say that no manufacturer's driver ids
necessary...that Windows will install its own drivers
when the hardware is detected. I just want a replacement
set of CD-Rom drivers. I can then point Device Manager to
the new drivers (though it may tel me that they are the
same as the ones I have already !

Rich Barry suggested:

The Problem turned out to be damged Registry Entries
caused by a (probably badly handled) uninstallation of
Kazaa Media Desktop.

I found the answer at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;314060&Product=winxp

Article NO: 314060 is abaout what can happen after an
uninstall of Easy Cd Creator, but uninstalling Kazaa had
the same effect.

After deleting the offending registry entries, I found I
had to re-install my copy od ECDC too(which I hadn't
uninstalled to begin with...actually I found that there
was an update available and that did the job anyway) but
it wasn't ECDC that caused the problem, it was Kazaa.

Device manager was saying that the drivers were missing
or damged but it was a bad registrty entry that cuased
the drives to disappear. Be warned !

The drivers are fine, its probably a corrupt entry in the registry
thats preventing them from working. Try this fix:

Download this fix to fix missing Cd drives or drives with error 39
etc:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm. Download
the vbs
script file, double click it and click yes when prompted. You will
need to
reboot for the changes to take effect.
