cd-rom drive starts and stops sporadically

I can hear the the cd-rom drive on my HP 763 with XP Home
start and stop sporadically throughout the day and night.
There is no disk in the drive. What is causing this to
occur

Thanks for any input and help.

Loose or faulty power cable or connection at the cdrom?
