CD-Rom drive inoperable in Win2K, except in Safe Mode

During the last few days my computer, Windows 2000
Professional, contracted a virus that infected all
the .EXE files. Norton Antivirus cleared it up, for the
most part.

I now notice that neither my CD-ROM drive nor my Floppy
drive will work when I boot up regularly. If, however, I
reboot into Safe Mode, both work perfectly. I do not know
if this problem is related to the virus infection or not.

To clarify the problem further, the CD drive plays Audio
CD's fine, and I can load in a R/W CD and the CD R/W
software (Nero InCD) works fine for formatting etc. But
whenever I attempt to use either the CD drive or the
floppy drive (with appropriate media inserted) in Windows
Explorer (just click on the drive in explorer), I get a
pop-up message that says "The disk in drive X is not
formatted. Do you want to format it now?".

A check in Device Manager shows both the CD and Floppy are
working properly and enabled.

The CD drive is a Lite-on LTR 16101B and it works fine in
Safe Mode.

I have Repaired the Windows installation from the setup CD
(used the floppies to boot) and I have also installed
Service Pack 3 (this PC had no service pack installed
before) and neither have made any noticeable difference
with this problem.

Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem. I seached the Symantec
site and found nothing. Did you have any luck?

Thanks in Advance

I have the very same problem. My drive is a TDK VeloCD
Rewriter 24/10/40B. I also have been dealing with virus
infections, but they have been cleared out. Perhaps there
is some residual setting which is causing the problem, but
I don't know where to look.

I have the same problem, however mine is linked to a new
installation of Norton 2004, and auto-protect. If I turn
off auto-protect during start up, I can read the drives
just fine (even when I turn it on once going). If I
reboot with auto-protect enabled, then CDrom data is not
available, but audio is.

As if symmantec would be so helpful. I have scoured the
web for a solution (to include Norton) but no luck. I
have emailed them, and they are supposed to respond within
3-4 days. I did not feel like paying $30 for support,
when I should be able to get the software for that.
Likewise I am screwed since I already sent in my rebate
stuff. Ops.
Jim
