I know this is pretty old stuff but I'm trying to hook up
an old cd-rom drive (4x speed) to my old 486 dos computer,
However my computer can't seem to recognize the cd-drive.
I have it set to slave but it still says "invalid drive
specification" when I try to go to d: in dos.
Anyone has any suggestions on what I could do?

The proper lines must be entered into autoexec.bat and
config.sys. To get a general idea of what is needed just
download a MSDOS boot disk from bootdisk.com.
You do not say which MSDOS version you are running,
but any of them will get you on the right track.
