CD-ROM Drive Doesn't Write

I've been using XP-Pro for about a year. A Week ago, my CD-ROM
drive stopped being recognized by Windows, even though it
was recognized by the PC. I tried a whole bunch of stuff,
including booting a from it with a CD. I finally found a kb
article (314060) that had me make a couple of changes in
the registry. That seemed to solve the problem, because the
drive reappeared in Explorer and other directory searches.
It also was able to read CDs via Windows again.

Trouble is, it can't seem to see blank recordable CDs, so I
can't record from it. I get the same messages from the CD
writing software that I received when the drive wasn't
recognized at all. I've been using Easy CD Creator 5, a
package from Broderbund, whose name I can't remember, and
the Audible Manager packager from Audible.com, with whom I
have a subscription for audio books.

BTW, I tried replacing the drive with another known good,
but the problem persists.

Anybody have any ideas? ? ?

Thanx,
B.Ray

What model drive is it?
I'm assuming you just mis-spoke, but CD-ROM drives cannot
write - only CD-R and CD-RW drives can do that. You have
a CD-R or CD-RW drive, correct?

Okay, I made sure that EZ CD was upgraded to 5.3.1.0 (or
something like that. It still reads but none of my Writing
programs recognize the drive when there's a blank CD-R or
RW in it. Also, I took a look at Regedt32 and found that I
again had to edit out the lines cited in 314060. I'll take
another look tomorrow to see if it's back again.
