cd-rom does not auto play

How can I find out if my cd-rom is too old and not
compatible after I've upgraded to Windows XP. It will play
a music cd but only if I play it thru Windows Media Player.
The cd-rom is 5 years old,came with the computer.

You say that plays in WMP. In what application doesn't it play?
