Can you specify the device id that is assigned to a CD-Rom. You could
in W2000 and it would be nice if you could in XP. I have looked in
all the places I should think of and I can't find it. Looked through
the register, but I didn't know what I was looking for really.

Your help is appreciated. Thanks

Hi Lee,

You mean the drive letter? Start/run diskmgmt.msc, then right click the
drive and there will be an option to do this. You can change any letter
except those assigned to the system and boot partitions (which are often the
same).

Start>Run 'msinfo32' opens System Information. Expand Components and
highlight CD-ROM. I don't know if the device id's listed there are what you
are looking for. Hope this is a start.

Thanks Rick. Your solution was perfect. Knew I had done it just
could not remember the steps. Much obliged.

Colin:
System Information is read only. Check out Ricks solution.
Actually you can right click My Computer go to Manage then to Disk
Management etc.
Thanks for your response
