If this is WinXP then look under,"Window's Help" for,"System Restore"
to start with.

In the Device Manager remove the entries for the Cdrom/DVD drives and
re-boot and let windows re-detect them and see if that helps?

I removed them in the device manager and rebooted and it told me that
new hardware was installed but when I go to my computer they are not
there and they are not working still.

If they are not showing in my computer, yet still appear in the device
manager with exclamation points, try this, it works most of the time for me.

RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system.
Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from
using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value
and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a
particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to
reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the
software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

You need someone to remove the cover from your computer to ensure that the
power and data cables are correctly connected. BEFORE you do anything else.
best wishes..J

I tried doing that in the registry and it won’t let me delete them.
It says there was error while trying to delete them. I would love for
someone to look inside my computer but I don’t anybody that knows
anything about computers and I don’t have the money to pay a
repairman.
