Question on CD Rippers (a new topic for me).

I have several here now that were recommended in this ng
and have been playing with them. So far they don't seem to
do what I'm trying to achieve.

I don't want to copy the *complete* (audio) CD
(Roxio that came with my writer will do that)
nor do I want to *convert* the tracks to MP3.
(which those I've downloaded will do)

I want to create a compilation of odd tracks from several
of my CDs either by incremental copying or saving to hard
drive and then burning the whole CD at once.

Any pointers much appreciated.

Whilst I'm writing . . .
Many thanks to all on this ng who put a lot of effort into finding
all these programs and taking the time to collate all the info.

What you are looking to do, it appears, is rip various tracks, save
them to disk in wav format, and then write them all to another disk.
Is that correct? IOW, you want a sort of "favorite songs cd" kinda
thing?

Are you sure that Roxio is unable to do what you want? Look through
options I am pretty certain that the software will enable you to save
selected tracks to the Hard Drive. When you have "ripped" the tracks
from various CDs you will then be able to write your audio CD using
the tracks on the Hard Drive.

It's not the full version !!
It came with a Memorex USB burner I bought for my laptop
and some of the functions are crippled.

Thanks, I'm downloading that as I write, I'll try that one too.

That's 100% correct !
After digging around to find some info on audio file formats . . .
Do I need to save them as .wav files onto my hard drive and then
convert them back (to some other format ?) when I burn the CD ?

Yes. With the free ripper I recommended, it gives you the option of
saving the ripped files as wavs (Look for "Output Format" in the main
screen after your device listing). You would then burn the wav files
onto your blank cd.

I *think* CDex might be what you want. It will do the ripping and
converting, but I don't understand why you want to rip to .wav and then
convert again (I've been told I can be dense). I rip mine straight to MP3,
then burn my favorites to CD and I'm done. With CDex, you can pick the
tracks to rip, where you want them on the HD, and in what format.

Thank a bunch. Off to try it out now.

Mr. Stewart,

Probably programs like Feurio let you copy your list of tracks from your
CD(s) on-the-fly to the destination CD-R or CD-RW disc. That's be made
easier if you have a CD drive to read from as well as a CD writer (burner);
ie two drives.

But it might after all be better? to rip to .wav files in your gard-drive
directory of choice; that way, you get a chance to (maybe) do minor editing
on the tracks? and certainly to pu thtem in whatver order you want, change
the names of the tracks, etc etc.

And don't forget, there are CDDB or similar databases on line with the
album and track titles. Some CD even have that info on the disc itself.

I *think* CDex might be what you want.

That's one of the programs that I was playing around with last night
and I quite like the interface.
It will do the ripping and converting, but I don't understand why

I don't really !
I rip mine straight to MP3, then burn my favorites to CD and I'm
done. With CDex, you can pick the tracks to rip, where you want
them on the HD,

I had got to that stage. I've got MP3 files that I ripped last night.
and in what format.

Think this is the point that I get confussssssed !
I want whichever format a "normal" CD-Player can handle.
My (domestic) DVD player can handle MP3/WMA files
but the ones in the 'puter and car can't.

I want whichever format a "normal" CD-Player can handle.

Thus, you want an audio CD?
In that case, simply rip the tracks you want as .WAV files. Choose to
create an "audio CD" (*not* a data CD) in your CD burning program and
select the .WAVs to be burned on the CD-R.

The program will create a CD that should be playable in all CD-Players.

I have. A CD-RW and a DVD-Reader.
I'll try that one too.

My dandies should help dispel your confusion. BTW, CDex is the one you want
to keep.

EAC is a great program for ripping music cd's. Used with LAME MP3
encoder it produces great results. Its the only Audio CD ripper I
would recommend.

Ta, the .zip is downloaded I'm just reading it and have
already picked up the stuff about bit-rates.
BTW, CDex is the one you want to keep.

I *do* like the interface.
I was getting "skipping" on MP3s (vocals) but a WMA of the
same track was OK. I'm now playing with the settings as I read
your help file.

Thanks,
