I have recently transfered some pictures from my camera
to a CD-R.
However the vast majority of existing pictures that were
on the CD have disappeared!

How can this happen on a CD-R, and is there any way I can
get them back?

If you are using XP's built in CD writing software then check here
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320174

If you are using third party software you may need to check the software's
site. One problem that can happen with multi-session recording, where you
incrementally burn files to a CD, is that the Table of Contents (TOC) can
become damaged or is unreadable. If this is the case try using ISOBuster to
see if you can read increments and copy the files off the disc to reburn to
another disc http://www.smart-projects.net/ Some software has it's own
"Session Selector" which will also let you examine the disc.

If you are trying to open the disc on a CD-Rom that doesn't have multi-read
capabilities, which is rare, then you need to use another CD-Rom drive.

I've had a case where a friend changed the name of the CD when adding
pictures. The previous pictures disappeared and could only be recovered with
Recover My Files which I bought and it did the job nicely.
As my pictures are important to me and I am paranoid, I have at least two
backups of everything!

Do a Google Search for Multisession CD-R. The photos were never lost. They
were merely in another "session" on the CD. You do not need to spend money
for "photo recovery" software as the other post suggested. You merely need
to enable seeing multiple "sessions" on your Cd drive.
