Compaq Laptop, XP Home, DVD/CD-R, using WMP. WMP works, but cd recorder quit. Tried Kelly's Line 23 fix and didn't work. If I put a blank CD-R it goes through the whole thing, up to writing the cd and then it says insert a "blank" cd, I keep hitting the Retry button, nothing goes. Put another Blank in there, same thing happens, repeats insert "blank" cd. If you cancel, it offers to store files until later or delete. I have tried writing data and music. Nothing. Will play DVD and cd will play music, and can install programs off of it.

What software are you using? Have you tried different software? Maybe the
drive is broken?

I am using the default Windows software of Windows XP. I don't have
additional software installed. It was working good just a few weeks ago. I
am not sure if maybe the updates could have affected it or not. The
original software worked easy for me so I kept on using it.
I have looked at my properties (on the DVD/CD-r) and things seem correct,
from what I can see. I even slowed down the record rate to 8X thinking
maybe it had gotten reset to "fastest". My other computer is set to fastest
and works fine.
Any ideas, would other software correct problem, or just add more stuff to
my system and still not work. I have found trying to correct something
wrong, usually only confounds things more. Any idea to tell if the drive is
broken?

Is it trashing your cds as well? I had a similar problem as you with just a
CDRW drive and it trashed the cds as well as those errors. I had to go to 4x
and then 2x before I could burn anything.

No, it just keeps asking for a "blank disc"
When you insert a blank disc in XP the window automatically asks what
you want to do. It does everything except copy to the disc. Spins a
couple times, then a window says "insert blank disc"

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago (no apperent reason for it
either).
I ended up deleting the CD drive in Device Manager and after restarting the
computer it was detected and installed again. Worked fine after that.
Might be worth a try for you too.

tried that, didn't work.
