CD Question...

I know this is more fo a software question, but I like this newsgroup so I
thought I'd try here. If I buy a CD Audio book...would it be possible to
covert it to an MP3 and play it on my portable MP3 player? Or would I have
to drag a cd player around? I've never bought an audio CD book so don't
know anything about it's formating...thanks.

There is software available to convert CD audio into MP3 audio; I use
dBPowerAmp (digital music converter) for this application.

Okay so audio books are like regular cds then? I wasn't sure if they were
protected and couldn't be ripped...I don't want to spend $19 on something I
won't be able to use at work (cd player is to bulky).
 
There shouldn't be any problem in what you want to do. You should be able to
save the .cda (kind of file on the cd) to a .wav file on your computer, or
an .mp3 file to copy onto your i-pod or whatever it is you use to play
mp3's. I use Nero with an mp3 plug in to do the conversion.

use a program called CDex it rules!!
 
Okay, cool. I was hoping I could and it wasn't protected. MP3 version is
$31 and the CD is only $19...would rather mp3 it myself and keep the cd for
home listening too :)

I've probably done 50 or more of them and all the ones I've found have been
totally standard audio CD format. I just rip them using whatever is handy --
most recently it has been the ripper that comes with Ahead Nero 6x. I then
convert them to MP3 into 64k mono format using LAME. For convenience I also
use "The Rename" (by Hervé Thouzard) to give the resulting huge batch of
files sensible names and then I use MP3tag (by Florian Heidenreich) to
properly tag them all. CD book are a dead cinch to work with and you
shouldn't have any trouble there. Once you get good at that you can tackle
cassette books which aren't nearly as much fun...
