Just upgraded to XP from '98. TDK 32/10/40x (which I
think is supported) CD burner is not recognized.

First, check the obvious. Make sure all cables are connected and the master/slave jumper settings for your IDE devices are correct. Look in the system CMOS when you boot up and see if the drives are listed correctly.

Upgrading to XP from 98 is dicey. There's plenty of hardware/software/firmware upgrades that may need to be installed to make things work properly. I would check TDK's website and look under "support". See if there are any updates for your drive for Windows XP, particularly a BIOS update. Also, check your computer manufactuer's support web site too. For example, Dell has a lot of good downloads for all their computer models.

Othing things I would consider: check for motherboard BIOS update, check Windows Support site for any updates that might be related.

WARNING!!! Doing a BIOS update is risky. You could ruin the device you are trying to upgrade, even if you do everything correctly. Check if your hardware warranty is in effect first before risking everything.

Its important to know whethet the disc can be seen in the cmos / dos during start up, then you have to check if it displays under my computer, if it displays under my computer but not in you cd writer software like nero then you have to update the burning software to a xp compatible version or just use the built in writing software of xp, it works well although limited.

Good luck!
