I used NotifyCD for many years but it is not so hot in XP. Anyone
know of a simple CD player that sits in the system tray only?

Look up "XM Player". It's a very small but versatile program.

I looked at CDrun which is nice but I cannot get XP to recognise CDrun
as the default player. Media Player keeps popping up on autoplay
which is irritating.

I'm using it in XP with no problem Do you have the autostart disabled?

You might want to take a look at OrangeCD Player at
<http://www.firetongue.com/>.

From the Web site:

<quote>
OrangeCD Player is a compact freeware program that allows you to listen
audio CDs through your computer CD-ROM and audio card. The player
supports FreeDB protocol and integrates with our music catalog software,
so every time you play a new album, it downloads track titles and other
information from Internet and automatically catalogs the album in your
music database. Other features include various playback modes, play
lists, direct track access and disc position memory.

Note that the Catalog program referred to is *not* freeware, only the
player.
