cd player problems

I am new so my question might be simple. I am not able to play dvd's or cd's
on my sony brand player that has burning capabilities. This problem started
here recently. I am able to burn music already stored in my library or that I
have downloaded but i am not able to rip music from my cd's. I have been told
that my drive might be corrupted or an updated program needs to downloaded.
Need assistance please. My program is windows xp professional.
