SO, confused

I keep having this problem with either Age of Mythology or Titans. When I go
to play online, it tells me my cd key can't be verified now, try later. I do
try later and nothing happens. I want to play online.

Call the game maker. If you shared your key or you're using a key from
someone else you'll have to get your own. Games with keys are designed to
thwart piracy, but usually only thwart online mode. If you're using a
shared key you'll have to stick to single player.

2 different games with key problems is marganially suspect to me.

Since no one that played it online has commented, i'll point out
that the AoM (EP0)&(EP1) 'Gold Edition' Bundle i have came with
one (1) single so called product-key. So if that single key is
not accepted by online servers i will have problems with two
/different/ games as well.

( Don't know if it was AoM or what game(s) , but i read that some
game(s) have the same key distributed with all game-boxes sold
and this would then cause problems when the buyers tried to play
online. An internet-search provided this link,
<http://forumplanet.gamespy.com/age_of_mythology/b48877/19735382/p1/>,
where someone claims something like that;
"the age of mythology you bought has to be a microsoft game not
ubisoft or xplosiv because they use the same cd key on most of
there age of mythology games which means only 1 person who bought
from these 2 can be online at 1 time." )

Yeah dude, that's called "Bootlegging", it's an old term used for
product made by people (Bootleggers) illegally of product that aren't
theirs for illegal profit. Where'd you buy the game? A local flea
market?

Now software distributed by different distributers (Microsoft, Ubisoft,
EA, Activision, etc.) may use different policies with their software.
Microsoft may use their key system, whereas the Ubisoft version may not,
but in either case the keys should be unique. Microsoft may verify the
key online and Ubisoft may not, either way I stand by my previous
statement. If the key isn't working, you're either entering it
incorrectly or the key isn't valid, Go buy another copy of the game.

I bought my game from Gamestop, and it was still vacuum sealed in plastic.
It has the same problem. What has been discussed is true. All games recently
sold have the same CD key. Because of this, none of us can play online,
despite the claim that the game has an online multiplayer mode. The answer
to this is to email the company who published the game and request a new CD
key-- they may ask for proof of purchase, so save receipts, etc.

I'm not sure what your problem is. I provided you with a
fact i know (one key for both games when sold as a bundle) and
provided for you and the OP, 'SO, confused', with a link to info
for something that i have also read elsewhere (that publishers
can ****-up and distribute the same key in each and every box
sold). I was thinking that this would make you more cautious
before accusing any poster about doing anything illegal in the
future. Wow! That didn't really work out the way i had thought
and hoped. Even worse, i see you now continuing to do it in
another thread.

Microsoft Server could be down or having problems. check your internet
connection. check the microsoft support site for troubleshooting network
connections.

I am recieving the same problem. Heres my explination:
Firstly, i unknowningly ran my new purchase of Age Of Mythology on an old
install from a friend, who was present to help me set up for online play.
Then he went home to play as well, and then the game booted me out. I found
the source of the problem, double use of the same product key, and told him
i;ll try a fresh install on my game. I did so, and it still gives me the
exact error, even after creating a new Username on the Online sub base.
Help from anyone please?

You have to buy another copy of the game.

When you connect online to play if someone else with the same product
key connects it'll boot out the other player. EVEN IF YOU USE A
DIFFERENT LOGIN NAME, if you both are using the same Product Key the
system won't let you both play.

If you keep logging in from 2 different computers, ventually Microsoft
will consider the key compromised and DISABLE the key altogether.

In other words, don't try to use the same key on two different
computers.

If Microsoft disables the key you'll have to buy 2 new copies of the
game if you want to play online.

So do yourself a favor, if you want to play with your friend, buy
another cd-key, or disable your internet before you play by yourself.

Ah, sorry Andy, should've explained it in better detail.
My friend has an older copy with a completely different CD key. I bought a
new copy with a completely different CD key. Then after we found our base
problem, he and i both reinstalled our games with our own separate CD keys.
It still gives us those Errors. Without Purchasing another copy(or 2) of Age
of Mythology, is there any possible way of re-enabling it so we can play on
the game?
Thanks.

Hi Sean,

Your problem is that the game has saved the serial number into your
registry.

To remove it, you would have to play inside your registry after removing the
game from your system.

Registry editing is extremely risky.

If you still wish to proceed, you can use the registry editor by clicking
start, and clicking run, type in 'regedit' and the registry editor should
appear.

You may have to research this part, but you would go to edit > find and
searching for age of mythology (after uninstalling it) - I find searching
for part of the title gets better results, so for example search 'mythology'
and look through the results for the serial. When and if you find it, delete
it.

Re-install using the different serial number.

Regards,
Dante.

Whew, thank god.

Umm, you need to uninstall the game, then go into your registry and make
sure all the entries for age of mythology are removed before
reinstalling with Key #2. It coule be possible that the key is stored on
your online account as well, you might try logging in with a different
key once you get the game reinstalled.

Reply if you need help with regedit, be careful you can cause your
system to not boot. (Run System Restore and save a restore point BEFORE
you do any editing, that way you can rewind your system if you run into
problems).

Thanks for the help so far guys. I am willing to try this regedit. Firstly,
how do i back-date my system, so that if something does go wrong, that i can
always go back to a previous date. Then, after i've searched and found my CD
key, or my friends, whatever, where do i look to remove it?
Thanks,
Sean

Sean,

There are many 3rd party security programs that will do it for you, and also
Microsoft Windows has it's own 'System Recovery' software that will take a
backup, I believe this can be found via Start > All Programs > Accessories >
System Tools. You can also export your registry to a .reg file via regedit.

To delete the CD key when you have found it, simply select it and hit the
'DELETE' key or right-click and delete it. A confirmation box will appear.

After that, re-install the game as Andy and myself advised.

I hope this works for you.

can... someone... please... help!! ... i'm diying here... im frustrated!! i'm
about to ... cut myslef... or somehitng... i have the massive cd key
sindrome... can any one help?? please??

Alpert,

Firstly, only one post is required for someone to help you. So far I've
found FOUR posts from you, all saying the same thing.

Secondly, don't reply on someone else's thread - start your own for your own
problems. The solutions given may or may not work for everyone.

Thirdly, don't write in capitals in your thread titles, it gives the
impression you are shouting and you are likely to get ignored for it.

Now - As I said below - You are a victim of the mass-produced CD key. You
need to contact Ubisoft for a new one, however you will need to give proof
of purchase, for example, a receipt.

Apart from that, no one on here can help you further.
