It looks like lots of others are having the same problems with XP losing
their CD and DVD drives. It's happening to me, too.

I've tried all the fixes I could find in this forum (MS Knowledge Base, Doug
Knox Website, AUMHA Website, VB Scripts, etc.) but nothing works. The
closest I got was by physically uninstalling both my CD and CD-RW, booting
up, shutting down, reinstalling the drives, and booting up again. While
that worked for awhile, both drives soon were unrecognized again.

Any other ideas?

The same thing happened to both my cd drives...
I ran McAfee virus scan and found a trojan virus... but
then i deleted it and then i reinstalled my drives but
they still don't work

Terrific.....atleast I'm not the only one with this
problem. My system was fine until I downloaded Easy CD
Creator 6. The creator 6 would not work, so I
uninstalled it and now XP can't find my cd & cd-rw
drives. It keeps telling me my drivers are corrupt.
Like you guys, I've tried "restore", looked through the
databases, websites, etc. I even broke down and called
Microsoft the other night. I was on the phone for 3 hrs
and they still can't figure it out. They're supposed to
call me back if/when they think they have an answer, but
somehow I think I'm going to have to dump my system and
reload my XP program.

That was part of what we did for 3 hours the other
night. It did not work. Microsoft is still researching.

This seems to be a common problem with a lot of users.

I lost access to my CD-drive a few days ago - the icon is
sitting there in "My Computer", but it cannot see any
files on any CDs.

I have a case raised with online support, having sent my
msinfo32 file, and am waiting for a solution.

I have tried it all - cleaning the drive, slotting a new
one in, changing IDE cables, changing master/slave
jumpers etc etc and nothing works.

It seems to be a common problem with XP.
