CD/DVD Won't Work

Whenever I put a disc in my D drive the activity light illuminates for a few
seconds then goes out and the drive does not appear to read the disc.

If I then click on a program that requires a disc in the D drive I get a
message telling me to put in the disc or that there is no disc in the drive.

Can anyone help please?
 
my evo n600c laptop had the same issue.
but then that laptop is like 6 years old.
what kind of DVD or CD are you trying to read?
(cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd+r, dvd+rw, game CD/DVD, or what?)
how old is your pc and what is the make and modle of it?
sometimes when i pc is p[ast a certian age it is not compatible with certian
types of CDs ans DVDs

Can you see the drive listed in My Computer?

I have a cheapish laptop that is forever missing its DVD ROM because
the IDE connection works loose when its being carted about. I fix it
by very firmly pushing the tray in and applying considerable pressure
at certain points - which remakes the connection. I will fix it
properly one day.

As a matter of interest the Drive only ever goes missing when I have
no access to any other machine or network PC ie when I really need it,
typical!
