CD/DVD ROMs unavailble

First, my question is to the MVPs in this NG and any NG for that matter.

When a user comes to this group with an issue do you confirm that it is a
problem and report it to MS Tech Support, or whatever the proper department
is?

There is a known issue starting with beta 2 that: "CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive appears to be missing after you install Windows XP or Vista Beta 2".
I'm just wondering if this has been reported to MS that it still exist?

It seems like when ever you install a problem that uses your CD/DVD-ROM
drive, they disappear and you have to use the steps in Article ID:320553 to
get then back. Or is the something we are going to have to live with as long
as we use Vista?

This issue exist with or without SP1!

No. Being an MVP is not a job. It's an award given for the past year's
voluntary help to users of Microsoft products (not just operating systems
like Vista or XP). So if you want to contact Microsoft about something, you
need to do this yourself.

I would guess that Microsoft knows that there have been problems with
optical drives disappearing since there is a Knowledge Base article about
it. FWIW, I've got quite a few XP boxen, one Vista machine, and work on
lots of XP and Vista computers for clients and have never experienced this
issue. I was a Vista beta tester from the beginning, before any public
betas were available and didn't have that problem during any of the beta
builds, either. That's not to say it doesn't happen - obviously it does -
but it isn't as prevalent as you imply.

Please note MVP's are not necessarily Microsoft employees. This is a peer
to peer newsgroup (not monitored by Microsoft). Read about the MVP program

Regarding the disappearing CD/DVD drive, does the fix you mention work? or
does this problem recur every time? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 -
is this the problem you're facing?

It may not be (only) Vista (or Windows generally) issue. Other things to
check although this may or may not help with the problem:

* Open the computer's case and check that the drive cables are firmly
plugged in (the power and data cable).

** Also go to the BIOS (press DELETE or whatever key when the system first
starts up) and check that the BIOS is detecting the drives.

*** One further thing, check the Device Manager in Windows to see if the
drives are listed there; delete them from device manager list, and re-boot
the PC, Windows should redetect the drives and install the appropriate
drivers.

I've been running Vista since it was released to the public and I've
never experienced the issue you mention. I'm sure many people have had this
problem but I don't think it's as prevalent as you suggest.

I know what MVP's are and their function. In most of the NG I deal with The
rep. (volunteer) for that software well try and reproduce the issue and if
they can will report it to the proper department. Corel is one such NG. It
is a functioning NG, not like some of MS's group
 
I think it is prevalent or they wouldn't have a KB article about it. It just
needs to be relied back to MS. I would think the MVP's would do this because
of their contacts with MS.
 
All I have to say about this is the first paragraph in
is a JOKE. MS needs to revamp their MVP
program.

If you're so hot on this, why not contact Microsoft yourself directly? I
don't have the time to go chasing this issue for you; an issue that as I've
said I haven't run across.

No matter what you think my job *should* be, it isn't my job to contact
Microsoft on your behalf.

Thank for the info Peter,

The resolution is basically the same as the old one. Still have to delete
the upper and lower filters in the registry and reinstall programs that
access the CD/DVD burners
