The CD drive on my laptop (running XP Home SP") keeps cutting in about
every 30 secs or so all the time the machine is switched on. Is there
any way of stopping this. Also I find that sometimes I cannot open the
tray and have to use a paper clip. Are the two things connected and
how to I rectify?

You probably have some physical problem. I would be sure all the cable
connections are tight.
