I can't talk about Plextor or others, but I note that Lite-On claims
that their drives are exceptionally good with unbalanced disks. I have a
hunch that they're right. The price is nice and low. No longer seeing
any reason to buy the best professional brand, for my last two burner
purchases, I threw my lot in with Lite-On ("When in Rome...").

Could be true. I bought into lite-on a year back or so... both drives
I bought 812s IIRC failed or are failing. I bought them because the
claim was that their CD support was superb and their dvd burning was
not too shaby either. I bought into NECs and I can say that DVD-video
compatability has improved greatly... and CDs i've noticed no issues.

I'd lean tward NECs as thus far i've enjoyed more compatabile burns.
My liteons are hardly reading discs they burnt them selves and one
drives won't even see media anymore.

Again, this is an older mail, the 812 IIRC, and I did use the hell out
of it, and it's lifespan could be limited to 1000 to 1500 burns.

Zake, I'm confused. What brand is "812?" What does "IIRC" mean?
Lite-On was actually recommended a while back by one of Plextor's people
themselves -- standard play drives -- for the purpose of extraction
(Plextor didn't make drives that didn't record at the time).

I don't know enough about these machines (maybe I don't want to).
They're considered throw-away products by their manufacturers. Like I'm
discovering more and more with consumer electronic products, there is no
longer any consideration for repair (even when repairs are possible and
easy). The manufacturer will simply state "the product is unrepairable"
(an answer that I actually received once from Panasonic).

My two Lite-On CD burners cost $27 each; they handle unbalanced disks
better and faster than my $300 Plextor of about 5 years ago. Lite-On's
bundled Nero software has much better manners than Plextor's Roxio,
which I've grown to despise. The Lite-Ons are Chinese; the Plextor is
from Japan. Plextor's support location has changed three times in the
interim (still in the USA).

On the other hand, I suspect that, for example, the optical alignment of
the Plextor may be superior, and the optics may remain in alignment far
longer. But the fact that Plextor hasn't even retained their own model
number in their support database did not bode well to me. Nor did the
fact that they provided no free upgrade path for their own excellent
proprietary software.

I guess that I'm joining the "throw-away society."
