I have WinXP SP1 on an Intel 865PE board with a Plextor
708A DVDR drive. Like many of you, I also have problems
with burning and exploring to this drive. My Explorer
crashes on it and my system no longer recognizes it until
reboot, or some other desperate measure.

An e-mail from Plextor surmised that I needed a BIOS or
driver update, and Microsoft's KB Article 322359
indicates that XP WON'T INSTALL THE CORRECT IDE DRIVER if
your motherboard uses an ICH4 or ICH5 chipset.

Now, this KB article tells me what files I need, namely
2003-dated intelide.sys and mshdc.inf, but it doesn't
tell me how to obtain them, except that it was corrected
in SP1. Well, I have SP1 and it doesn't install the
intelide.sys driver! Can a Microsoft Specialist let us
know how to deliberately (and safely) install this one
driver?

Hi,

With a simple Google search I found the updated files at:
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/desktops/us/download/18134.html

Download the file SP24179.EXE from the above URL. If you don't have an HP
system, unpack the .EXE with Winzip and rename the file "US.DAT" to
"US.EXE". US.EXE is a self-extracting EXE containing another EXE, which is
(are you following this so far...) the original Q322359 hotfix from
Microsoft. I was then able to install it on my (non HP) system.

Hope this helps..

I found the file and extracted the original hotfix,
thanks! But when I ran it, nothing seemed to happen. I
assume it was supposed to update my drivers and then ask
for a reboot? Nope. So I checked the Device Manager and
found that it still listed the old "pci" file.

In frustration, I right-click/installed the mshdc.inf
file. Still nothing. So in desperate frustration, I
went into the Device Manager and deleted the standard
dual ide channel devices. NOT RECOMMENDED. But after
rebooting, XP found the new drivers. I've still to fully
test everything, though.
