RE: Plextor PX708A CD/DVD +- RW
I have an odd problem. I can use my drive without issue, I can burn and read both CDs and DVDs just fine. The problem is that I cannot see any of the icons for the files on CDs or DVDs. It is the same for both burned disks and retail disks. See the screeshot for an example. You can see the "actual" icon underneath the windows default non-association icon. For example, For the folders, starting with KB883939 and ending with "Visual Basic Runtimes", you can just see the edge of the folder icon sticking out from underneath on the far right of the displayed non-association icon. I can see the proper icons for a split second when I first navigate to the CD/DVD but then the display changes to one similar to like the one in the attached picture. The icons display overlaid like this regardless of whether I set my view type to List, Details, or Icons. They display like this regardless of file type or folder. I have upgraded my drive firmware to the most current version and no luck.
There are no errors or any real information returned from the drive.

I was originally thinking this was a windows problem, since most problems like this are(And it may be yet
), but I have since bought an entirely new PC and re-installed windows. I have Windows XP Professional SP2 with a majority of the patches from windows update installed. The original PC was an AMD Athlon 1200 with 512M RAM, the new PC is a
P4 3.6G HT
Gigabyte GA-8I945G Pro motherboard
2G Dual-DDR PC-5400 RAM.
CD Drive is primary master on IDE-0.
Boot drive is 250G SATA II running in AHCI mode on SATA port 0.
2 exteneded 80G drives running on the RAID controller on RAID-IDE-0 in ATA mode.
On-board video and sound for the time being(Until the spring).
Rockwell internal HCF 56k modem
24G Linux partition on RAID-IDE-0 slave.
The display is/was the same on both PCs(i.e. The non-association icon overlaid on top of the actual icon). It started doing this about 6 months ago. The disks display fine everywhere else. Any Ideas. I'm quite proficient in Windows and very rarely come across something I can't figure out myself so this is kind of an irratation.
