Hi

I have 2 CD Rom drives on my PC and when I boot/reboot Windows only picks up
one. I then have to go into Device Manager and click on check for change in
hardware for that section, and only then the 2 nd drive appears.

Is there perhaps a way to rectify the situation so Windows can just boot up
with both ?

regards

I'm experiencing the same issue. Two drives, but neither one have been seen
in a couple of days. I did reseat the drives in another IDE slot, but that
ended up reassigning my hard drives! S**t!

This has also happened to my audigy sound card. It was there, I swear a
couple of days ago.Dunno what to do.

Your not alone.

It appears you 2 are not alone, I lost both my CD ROM and DVD this morning.
My printer has not worked at all since the install either.

It would have been really nice of them to allow us to revert to our previous
drivers for XP so that they would work till they posted an update that would
correct the problems..

I have gone through two brand spankin' new Gateway GT5412 computers that
will not load the driver for the DVD drive..the first one worked once, then
failed, so I thought it was a hardware issue...silly me...the second one
won't load at all...device driver failed error 39..brand new, out of box.
After 45 minutes waiting on Gatway, they suggest a system restore to maybe
fix the issue...also stated that attaching a printer, any epson, to the
computer will cause some DVD's to go away...but I attached NOTHING...and the
driver dumped...pretty bad, have wasted countless hours chasing nothing..what
a mess

Having the same problem with the DVD, when it does try to work it won't
finalize the disk. Its a gateway bought at costco. Costco tech has been great
but some of the people at gateway are the pits. One was rude as can be, first
tried to tell me that Vista Home premiun doesn't have the ability to record
DVD's. I told them I'm reading the manual and it says its does. She said I
was calling her a liar. She then told me to take the computer to someone like
Bestbuy and have the geek squad fix it.The costco rep was listing to our
conservation because they were the only ones that could connect me with
Gateway. The gateway tech got rood with her and wanted her to get off the
line and not listen. I asked for her superviser and she got mad as hell and
hung up on us. Her badge # was 73347

I ran into the same problem after installing an Epson printer. Look under
the thread "cdrom" for the posting "Vanishing CDROM" and select the reply by
PETER FOLDES. His reply contains a link to detailed information on how to
recover without doing a system re-install, and I wish you all the best of
luck.
