i have a relatively old laptop, it is running XP with SP2, it's about 5
years old and i intend passing it down to my son, everything works fine
except for the cd/dvd drive, it works physically i.e. it opens and closes and
the light works when i insert a disk, but then nothing. i have had a look at
device manager and it recognises the drive but it has a yellow triangle with
an exclaimation mark in it, i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the
drive but i get a message stating that the driver has been installed but
there is a problem???. i have also tried to use an external cd/dvd drive
which is plug and play but i have exectly the same problem which leads me to
believe that there must be a setting that needs to be 'tweeked' somewhere.
any help would be appreciated. kind regards to all.

with reference to the question, the actual message i recieve from device
manager is; "windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware
but cannot find the hardware device. (code 41)

Try asking at CDfreaks.com - they are a goldmine of great people
who know a lot about troubleshooting optical drives.

Probably not much help but I had almost the same problem. In the long run I
found I had deleted one of the software programs needed to run the CDs.

Hi michigan,

See if the information in this MSKB article helps you to resolve the
problem:

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an
error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording
program in Windows XP: "error code 31"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314060/en-us

Although error code 41 is not mentioned in the title of the article, it is
mentioned in the "Symptoms of the problem" section.

Regards,
