Cd / dvd drive not working in windows

When I insert a disk, the drive spins up, but nothing
happens. If I click on the drive in windows, I get a busy
cursor and the drive spins, but nothing else. The weird
thing, is that if a boot cd is iserted at startup, it
works fine! - I can only presume their must be some
conflict, but the drive was working fine on this os /
compter / install originally!

Yes, I have the same problem with my cd burner and dvd drive. My A drive does not work either.

Even more weird, is that it still doesn't work after a
totally clean install of winxp, but does work in safe
mode?!! - this is surely not possible?
