I just bought this laptop 2 weeks ago and it's been working great (Compaq
V5000). Dvdrw/cdrw was working fine until tonight. I don't know what
happened.. but in My Computer the drive isn't even there.. just my C-drive
with my programs is there. I checked the system files etc and I can find no
sign that I ever had a cd/dvd drive. I'm sorry I can't explain it better, but
I don't understand computers very well and I'm 17 and really really confused.
The drive is completely gone though, I can't play cds at all. I ran
windowsupdate etc and as far as I can tell I'm up to date with everything. I
don't know how you download drivers for it.. or if that is what you would do,
so if someone could point me in the right direction and help it would be
greatly appreciated!

Try removing the drive from your system and let Windows re-discover it.

Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>CD/DVD Drives (click "+" to
open)>Right click on the drive and then select "uninstall". Restart the
computer and see if the device is reinstalled.

If not, you can try removing the drive from the IDE ATA/ATAPI list. Same as
above, except open IDE ATA/ATAPI list>right click on the controller and then
select primary or secondary channel. Find the CD/DVD and remove (uninstall)
it. Restart computer.

Windows should rediscover and reinstall the drive.
