cd/dvd device error

My sony vaio notebook has been very unstable since
installing xp pro. I therefore backed up files
frequently. But now, I have lost the ability to burn
cds. When I try to use cd writer, or burn a music cd
using win mediaplayer, the computer either- a)restarts
and says that a serious error occured and then gives an
unknown device driver html page. b) goes to blue screen
saying win32k.sys error c) says unable to write to the
cd, then when closing disc tray it will often lock up or
restart.

I just tried starting up in safe mode and received the
following message as it checked hardware:

ATAPI CD-ROM UJDA710
ERROR
0210: Stuck Key 42

the cd/dvd device in the computer is a Matshita UJDA710

does anyone have a fix for this problem? If I were to
buy a new cd/dvd would it help? Based on the instability
of the computer, and sony's total lack of support, I
don't know if further investment is justified. I'm about
ready to just give this notebook to my kids and go back
to using powerbooks.

Can you get some more details of the error?

- click Start
- right-click My Computer, go to Manage
- select Event Viewer, and then System Log

As for the "Stuck Key" error, that probably showed up since you were holding
F8 to go into safe mode. In other words, it's harmless.
