My windows XP computer came with a CD DVD burner drive and was working
perfect until last week, when I try to play or burn a CD I get a message
which says "NO CD OR DVD BURNER HAS BEEN DECTED" I just can't get it to work.
Can anyone help please? Thank you.

hi,

Try re-installing the drivers for the DVD burner...If that does not
work...Check in device manager[press the windows key and the pause key--->
click on Hardware tab--> Device Manager--->],if the DVD burner is
detected...If not..do check the physical connections of the drive. If the
drive is detected...do uninstall the drive from device manager and reboot the
computer...

Cheers,

You may also have to check that the burner shows up in BIOS. If not it
could be a hardware failure.

Thats so weird that you say that because i've got the same problem as well,
happening only as of a week ago. Not only can I not use my cd burner, I can't
even play any cds or dvds in the drive. My computer doesn't detect that there
is even any such drive on the computer. Anyone having any luck getting theirs
to work again??

Also, have any of you noticed this problem in relation to the problems going
around with the Sony-BMG rootkit? The only change I can think of in relation
to my cd drive disappearing is the fact that my virus program located this
rootkit and (unsuccessfully) tried to remove it. Reading info on this
rootkit, many other people have had the problem of their cd drive virtually
disappearing if they attempted to manually remove this rootkit. Just
wondering if any of you have had the same problem, and if so if you know how
to get the drive back!

Hello Everone. I have a DELL VOSTRO 1500 with the same issue. Just to add
to the issue, I have a external CD/DVD and when I attemtpted to record with
it I got almost the same issue. Ok, then I loaded Nero and was able to burn
DVD's with NERO only to both drives. Based on that I believe it to be an
operating system issue. You see it worked just fine when I had Windows Vista
loaded but when I down graded to XP (for software purposes) the CD burner
stopped. I have tried all the suggested fixes and none haved worked. I have
also worked with the Dell representative as well and have gotten no joy. I
did check the HCL and found the drive was not listed with windows XP. My
only issue with that is the external drive doesn't work as well. I NEED HELP
PLEASE.

You have hijacked the OPs post. You should have posted a completely different
problem and it has a different solution.

Windows XP can not burn any DVD +-R(w) media without any other utilities like
Nero. XP was never designed for writing DVDs since XP came out before DVD
writing became popular.
