CD Drive

I had just connected a CDRW drive model Samsung SW232B into my new system
running Win XP Pro SP2, this drive was previously running on a Win98 system
with no problem at all.

Upon boot up, windows detected my new drive and installed the necessary
drivers. However, I realised that the device name found by Windows is not
exactly correct, some letters are missed out or replaced by a colon ( ' ).
Anyway, I thought it is ok, but only when I try to read a disc, I was not
able access any files from the disc even though they can be seen in window
explorer.

Things I had tried with no success;
- many other discs,
- uninstall the device and rescan for new hardware,
- updated the firmware using my old Win 98 system,
- changed ide cable,

Still Windows will detect the drive with wrong device name and not usable.
Device Manager does not show any errors with the drive.

Is there is anything else I can do to let Windows detect the drive correctly.
I really will appreciate any help. thanks

Is that model supported for Windows XP?

Have you installed the latest firmware for your drive?

Yes, the model is supported as documented in the compatibility list.

I had installed the latest firmware from the manufacturer's website. Even
the upgrading of firmware had to be done with my Win98 system cos the upgrade
software cannot recognise the cd drive as it have a different device name as
intended.

It is listed under CDROM -> SAMSUNG' CD-R/RW SW'232B in Device Manager

The correct name should be SAMSUNG CD-R/RW SW-232B.

As for how files and folders on the disc are named in windows explorer,
there are also extra signs such as $'/@ in the some file or folder names.
When I try to execute a .exe file on the disc, there will be either a
kernel32 or win32 error related msg. Some folders will also be empty when
there should be files and folders with changed name are not accessible.
