CD drive won't refresh

My Asus CD/DVD combo drive will not update the volume OR THE content
informaiton when I swap disks. I noticed this some months ago.

I reformatted my hard drive (for other reasons) and found that both of my
CD/DVD combo drives will not reflect the new disk (i.e. installing my
programs, WIN XP SP2 displays the volume name of the FIRST disk. The volume
name (preceding the drive letter) never changes when I insert other program
disks.) In addition, the displayed content from the FIRST disk remains. The
only way to clear the content is to eject the disk, F5, re-insert the disk.
The new CONTENT will display, but the VOLUME name never changes until I log
out of Windows.

This is particularly troublesome when playing DVDs.

Is a registry setting off? If so, anyone know what setting I need to check?
 
I don't think that disabling the AutoRun would help. I think
that the 'auto insert notification' is deactivated and should
be activated which can be done with my tool. Restart required.

Thank you for creating that tool Uwe, it has worked like a charm for me..
No more sitting around waiting for autoplay to figure out what media or
program to use, only to find it has made the wrong choice or can't even tell
if any media was inserted.. It is just a very nice tool to use to enable,
disable, test autoplay settings for all users or for the current user, etc..
Keep up the good work..

a PC do without autoplay but enabed notification?
 
Well, GEVan you have posted to me, sounds like you want an explanation from
Uwe, post to him..


You might try Uwe's new Auto Run Settings tool, included in a previous
post.. Open the tool, under local machine (all users) see if you can under
"Drive Types" (restore) check the box for CD/DVD insert notification
([disabled] mine is unchecked) [requires a reboot].. For current user "Drive
Types" I have my CD/DVD box unchecked, for current user "Drives" I have my
G:& H: drive letters unchecked, this effectively has disabled autoplay for
the optical drives and has allowed me to use software and media (manually)
without a problem, you may need to experiment for your preferred settings..

you look at it..?

You would just need to start a related app manually, simply put, you would
have to start Windows Media Player or another media app(s) yourself or
burning app(s) when inserting a DVD movie or DVD-/+R/RW, the same would be
true for commercial CD's or CD-R/RW media.. A DVD movie would not change the
icon in My Computer, holding the pointer over the icon would reveal it's
size only.. One thing I have noticed with disabled notification though, is
that if a DVD movie is left in the optical drive when the computer is shut
down the DVD title is shown on reboot and after ejecting the media the icon
will not refresh unless you log off or reboot without media present in the
drive..
 
Notification enabled just makes the CDROM driver sends a
notification message around when a media has been arrived
or removed. Everything else is up to the receivers of this
message. The Explorer decides then which action should be
done then.
With notification disabled no one will see when a new media
is there, even the Explorer will not refresh the drive's
label with the new media's label.

Try The Windows XP TweakUI powertoy or Uwe Sieber's tool to disable the
autoplay feature(s) on the CD/DVD drives, may be part of the problem..

The above should help, did for me, anyway..
If TweakUI is too unstable for you try the new tool, your call..
