Since yesterday, we've been unable to play CDs (unburned) on our computer.
The CD goes in, but it's not being read. Windows Media indicates that there
is no disk in the drive.
Any advice? Is this a mechanical problem or a software problem?
Thanks!
Could be either. "Unburned" means retail music CDs?
Suggestions:
Check sound settings in Media Player: digital vs analog. Try both.
Eliminate possibility of bad CDs by testing them in another computer's cd
drive. Try other types of CDs (software or data) in the same drive.
You said that the CD isn't being read at all. Does the drive's light
flicker at all, at any time? Is there any whirring noise of the disk
rotating?
Does the drive show in the POST screens? In BIOS? In Device Manager?
If drive isn't recognized, what has changed between it working and not
working?
If the drive is recognized, how long has it been since it's been cleaned?
Follow manufacturer's directions for this. You can damage some drives with
those cleaning kits so you want to follow the mfr's recommendations.
