CD Drive not Recognized

I placed a CD in my CD-ROM drive, but nothing happened. I am using Windows
XP, SP2, on a Dell computer.
I tried the setup utility in the BIOS; I set all of the drives listed to
"AUTO", but this did nothing. The CD-ROM drive still does not show up in "My
Computer."
What can I do in order to be able use a CD on my computer?

Does the CD drive show at bootup (before Windows loads) and does it show in
the BIOS?
If not - this is a hardware issue - nothing to do with Windows.
Check the drive jumper settings and make sure the cables are connected
securely.

If it is not seen in your system BIOS - windows will never see it.

Thank you for your response.
When I run the BIOS, this is what I see:
Diskette Drive A: 1.44 MB Disc
Primary Drive 0: Hard Drive
Primary Drive 1: Unknown Device
Secondary Drive 0: Unknown Device
Secondary Drive 1: Unknown Device

When I continue with the boot up, I get the message:
Primary Drive 1: not found
Secondary Drive 0: Not found
Secondary Drive 1: Not found

The "A" drive shows up in "My Computer", but no other drives show up. The CD
drive is built-in to my computer, just as my "A" drive.
My computer is a Dell OptiFlex GX260 Series, with BIOS revision A03.
Any ideas?

Looking at what you have given...
Your internal CD drive is not being seen in the BIOS.

If you have done what I suggested (opened the computer and made sure the
cables arre securly connected - while the machine is off of course and
checked the jumper settings on the CD drive) -- then you likely have a dead
CD/DVD drive and it needs to be replaced.
 
Has this CD-Rom drive ever worked in the past?
