HI..I hope someone here can help me.

The CD rom drive on my Gateway compter (running WIN 98 SE) died. I
have 2 drives on this computer. a DVD/CD ROM as Drive D and a CD burner
on Drive E. I replaced the D drive and somehow in doing this, I
damaged the E drive (It wont open any more), so I removed the E drive.
Now I have the new drive in, but for some reason, WINDOWS recognizes
this drive as drive E, not Drive D (I put the new drive in the same
spot as the old drive d, using the cable hookups that were used as the
Drive D. Is there something I missed in setting this as D instead of
E? There were minimal installation instructions and they didn''t say
anything about setting anything on the drive. Is there something I
should look for?

THanks for any help

Go into device manager, check if you have any errors (exclamation marks) and
remove any devices that are not installed. When you added the 2nd drive you
did have them set as master\slave ?.
best wishes..OJ

You see..thats the question....how do I tell. I remember something
about that from years ago when I put in a new hard drive, but there was
no documentation on setting that with the drive (I got minimal
istallation instructions - turn off computer, attach cables, restart
computer...thats about it. No information about settings of any kind!)
I will check some stuff to see if I have any jumpers to set.

Thanks

Every optical drive I have seen (in the last five years at least) has a
six-pinned (three position) jumper block labelled like this:

CSM
SLA
....
....

The labels are vertical. From left to right:

CS - Cable Select
SL - Slave
MA - Master

Simply put your jumper block over the appopriate setting. Cable select
is used when you have a biased cable -- it will be marked, at the plugs,
Master and Slave. So, if you use cable select, and you have a
"selecting cable," the drive's master/slave setting will be determined
by the cable.

Thanks Grinder, you saved my typing finger for me. <g>.

Just to let you all know..that was the problem. I set the jumper to
master and everything works ok now. Once again, thank you for all your
help

What's the question, how do you tell what, what about that. Do you
detect a lack of context in your post?

All posts should stand by themselves and include proper quotations
to establish context. There is no reason to assume any previous
messages are, or ever will be, available to your reader. This is
inherent in the distribution mechanism. If you must use the foully
flawed google interface to usenet, at least follow the instructions
in my sig, below.

I don't know...CBFalconer...Obviously, other people were able to see
what I needed as I was able to get some answers from them. If you read
the entire thread, I got the help I needed and I got my problem solved.
I thanked the people who helped for helping me solve my problem.

Yes, I use google to post here. I have never had any problems with
anyone not seeing my posts either here or in other forums I have posted
in. Maybe it is you that needs the adjustment.

Alright, you obviously don't care to learn anything about the
proper use of this medium you are posting in, nor to make things
clear to possible readers. I shall attempt to ignore your
education. You do appear to have suddenly learned how to provide
quotes via google, but not how to snip and bottom-post.

Well..Here I am, using what you term "proper use". I did follow your
"instructions" to get the quoted message. I don't know. I have
been posting to Internet Newsgroups since I got my first taste of it
from AOL in 1996, and on many other internet providers since, and I
never found someone so hung up on quoting previous messages as you seem
to be. I personally feel that a)a message with just a response is much
less cluttered and readable and b)if a person is interested in what I
am talking about, he/she will read the entire thread to get the jist of
what is going on. Right now, I use Google to access newsgroups.
Why...because I like it. I have used Secret Agent, Outlook Express and
other readers in the past, using many other names and emails. When I
responded, if I remembered to do so, I would delete the previous
message if the reader put it in my new message. I find this cleaner.
I do the same with my email. I do not like to reread stuff in message
after message. I guess I just don't have the short attention span
you must have because I don't need to be reminded time after time.

Oh well...like I stated before, my question I had here was answered.
The people that answered it did not seem to have any problems. I post
in other Internet Newsgroups, and the people there don't seem to have
many problems with my posting style there. Since I did find my answer,
I will bid this group a fond farewell. Once again, thank you to the
people who helped me out.

You are obviously not the type of person at whom I was directing my
original comment. Many new users today, especially those using the
fouled google interface, have no idea what is happening. I, and
others, try to clue them in. Sometimes our assumptions are wrong.
:-)

Replies obviously don't need full quoting. They do need sufficient
to establish context, and they do need to be able to stand by
themselves.
