In preparation for a repair reinstallation of Windows XP, I am trying to
back-up files and folders by copying them onto CD's; unfortunately, when I
reach the point at which I click on CD Drive D, I get a message that Drive D
is inaccessible. What can I do?

What backup software are you using?

Windows' own ntbackup software does not backup directly to CDs. You must
backup to your hard disk first, and then burn the image to CDs.

Hi Ed.
I've been scouring the newsgroups for help on this same problem for
weeks, and haven't yet had anyone give me a solution. Mine will burn a
music CD or a picture CD, but will not burn data- whenever I try I get
the same message as you: 'D:/ unaccessible - Illegal function'. Also
when I put a blank CD in the drive I get the same message, but if I
leave that CD in the drive and click on .wma or .mp3 files, I can burn
an audio CD just fine - the mediaplayer burns the disc just great.

It used to work just great, and I have absolutely no idea what happened.
The only thing that's changed is an upgrade to SP1, but I have another
PC with the same upgrades, and it's still working fine, so I'm stumped!

If anyone figures this one out, I'd like to see what the fix is!
