For about 3 weeks now when we try pushing the button to close the cd-
rom drive it reopens. Does anyone know what could be causing this?
I'm going to the store and getting a can of compressed air to see if
any dust might be preventing it from closing.

Either the switch that detects it closing is failed in some
way, the gears or belt mechanism that closes it is slipping,
or the position of the tray relative to the gears has
changed (meaning the drive *expects* the switch to sense
that the tray has closed completely when the gear rotates to
a certain point but since the gear and tray aren't aligned
right to each other anymore, that isn.t happening.

If it is a gear-tray mismatch as written above, you'll need
to take the case off, manually eject the tray and press in
the retention tab(s) that keep it from coming completely
out, so you can then take it completely out. Next examine
the range of travel of the mating gear and realign the gear
as it should be at the end of the tray extension, before
putting the tray back in. It's easier to do it than explain
it briefly.

A dust problem isn't likely.

And finally, don' t close the tray anymore by pushing it manually, but use
the ad-hoc button !

If you have a built-in "flip" door on your case you may need to slide
the cd-rom a little more towards the front end of the case to allow
better physical contact with the "push button".

If that doesn't solve it then consider replacing the drive, cd/dvd drives
are quite cheap.

Perhaps something is catching in the door - I had this problem a few years
ago and to my embarassment, it turned out that a curtain was catching in the
edge of the drive. I had the thing in pieces twice before I realised how
silly I'd been.

Check for the obvious first!

CD DVD drives eventually go bad. I had a Memorex CD-DVD combo drive in
which the door wouldn't open and it was less than a year old. Memorex
replaced it under warranty. I have had one older CD drive just stop working.
