All of a sudden my cd/cdrw drive is not recognizing any cds; I have tried
both commercial music cds and also data cds that I have saved info on.
I tried system restore - it didn't help. I also checked the device driver
properties and it says the drive is in there. Any suggestions? I am running
Win Xp and got the system at Christmas.
Thank you.

Same thing happened to me yesterday, replaced with another .
can be difficult sometimes when little used, comes as a bit of a shock.
all of my files are sent to external drive shared on network.

Same problem here. I went nuts trying to burn CDs; exchanged them
at Staples TWICE; still no luck. Turns out it's not the fault of the
discs. Drive just will not recognize any disc. Keeps telling me
"insert a disc in Drive D" -- when there IS already one in there!

Also -- and this may have a bearing? -- CD drive drawer opens and
closes on its own! Weird...

IMPORTANT: I *used* to be able to play discs on this system.
What could have caused it to go bad?

Running XP on a Dell that is about 2-3 years old ...

TIA

Thanks Deejaydee and Aspasia- I am going to get a new cd drive put in -
possibly it is the laser or something. It did come as a bit of a shock - you
get used to having something working when you need it and then it is painful
to have it not work! :-)
Thanks, I am glad I found this forum!
