CD burning under vista broken?

I am trying to burn a CD under windows Vista x64 this is on a completely
fresh clean install of vista to rule out any other conflicts. Reguardless of
the type of burn I try to do Mastered, etc... I have the same net result. The
CD go through all the motions of burning and when it is complete, I am
informed that it was burnt sucesfully. If I subsequently try to read the CD
Vista asks me if I want to format the CD, almost as if it is trying to treat
a CD as an RW.

I then tried loading Nero on the machine as I heard this would solve this
issue, however same result, Nero completes informing me that the CD was
sucessfully burnt, and ejects the CD. If I then re-insert it Vista asks if I
want to format it.

The machine can read DVD's and CD's I have created on another machine under
XP. It can also read CD's created on this machine when it was XP.

The config of the system is:

MSI K9N SLI platinum system board.
LITEON LH-20A1H

all running VISTA Ultimate X64.

Any Ideas?

My first idea might be to try a different burner, just to double-check it
isn't a hardware fault. If you want to tell me that it almost certainly
isn't because the burner worked under XP then I'd be inclined to agree with
you but you've got to start somewhere and there's a difference between
probably being right about the h/w being fine and actually being able to
prove it beyond doubt.

Unfortunately I can also duplicate the issue on 2 other (exactly) identical
configured systems.

Hmm. Well It might be an issue with Vista and that particular brand of
burner perhaps. While the Vista burner support is ever bit as appalling as
you might expect it to be, it does seem to work here. Admittedly the thought
of using it for anything serious makes me lose the will to live, but it
isn't constantly crashing with my setup (a couple of LG "super"DVD drives)

Robert,

I thank you, you got me thinking it may be the burner and lo it was. I
checked the Vista HCL for this drive and it was listed as being compatible my
MS and had received certification testing, and whatnot.

I then tried contacting lite-on support, about this drive and after the
tech asked me about 20 questions, he then disconnected the chat session
Abruptly.

so with no direction, I thought about what you said, and went out today
and purchased two replacement Samsung drives that are not listed o the
Microsoft HCL (at all) and installed them, in about 10 minutes I have burnt
successfully a test CD.

So now I have two liteon drives that are going back to New Egg, since they
do not work under vista, (work fine under XP.) and well since their tech
support treated me the way that they did, I will not use them in my other
machine which is being built as a server, and will insure I never buy their
product again.

-Cheers!

Glad to hear you've got things working now, even though it sounds like
you've had far more trouble with liteon than you ought to have had.
