Just came across a helpful list of free cd burning programs with
descriptions, and I thought I'd share. A real find. It's a pity that
so many great web-based forums can't be located, read, archived and
manipulated with a common interface like newsgroups, but they
certainly have their uses... :) Enjoy.

Sony CD Extreme does not appear to be listed.
I found other programs to be (like too much software) unnecessarily
complicated.

From the readme file I have:-

1. Download Sony CD Extreme [alternate location]
http://www.webtree.ca/newlife/user/CDExtreme.zip
2. Unzip that file and install Sony CD Extreme

3. Download this update for the Sony CD Extreme software.
http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/downloads/SonyCDExtremeUpdate.zip
4. Unzip that file and update the software.

5. Download this Prassi engine update (for more burner compatibility)
ftp://eval.veritas.com/downloads/pro/exe/PxEngineUpdate327.exe
6. Run that EXE to install the newer Prassi engine.

7. The manual can be found here in PDF format.
http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/downloads/cdx_manual102500.pdf
8. Run the Sony CD Extreme software

9. Click on 'go to full application'. Select your burner drive from
the column on the left.

10. File --> New Job --> Data disc

11. Enter your Volume Label beside 'Volume Label'

12. Right-click in the middle of your screen and choose 'Add Folder'.
Pick the folder you want to burn.

13. Right-click again in the middle of your screen and choose
'Recording Options'. Beside 'File System Type', choose ISO Level 2
(212 characters). Click OK.

14. One note, under the 'Speed' dropdown box, pick the speed you want
to burn at instead of choosing 'max'. For some reason on 'max' it
would only burn at 4X with my 8X burner, so I had to choose 8X
manually.

15. Choose 'record' from the pull down menu. Click the red record
button.

And there you have it.

Jeeze, what a grand complication. It better be a super-duper-great program
that does everything including dishes. :)

Sony CD Extreme does not appear to be listed.

I think that's appropriate. No matter how good that program may be,
it's not freeware. That issue was debated to death here until someone
asked Sony and posted their official response in this group. If you'd
like to see the letter:

Use the program if it doesn't trouble your conscience, but you really
shouldn't promote it as freeware.

It's not abandonware either, by the usual definition. Given Sony's
seeming disinterest in protecting what they nevertheless continue to
claim as their intellectual property, may we'll call it
"neglectware"... :)

A question on deepburner: If I extract its files from the installer and
run it, will that be ok?

The reason I ask is because I need it on a pc where I log on as a user
and not as an administrator, and the commercial software already
installed is totally troublesome.

Please read the license agreement carefully and think twice before you
install deepburner. I think you will find that it is adware at best,
and probably spyware; and it could cause you a lot of trouble once the
programme is installed on your hard drive.

Putting those 2 posts together, wouldn't it be cool if a spyware scanner
like Ad-Aware or SpyBot could scan install files or zip files for spyware?

X-No-Archive: yes

Certainly it does not seem to be a spyware but it has no place in this
group as it clearly says it is a try and buy software with a thirty
day evaluation period.

FYI, it is still in beta.

Current comment from forum admins at the site seems to be that:

V1.x IS freeware, does NOT expire, and does not have ad/spy components
- though the licence itself seems to be less reassuring unless they've
got round to altering it.

V2 will be shareware
