Hi All,
Would like to replace my CD-ROM with a DVD reader/CD writer but am confused by the +/- stuff. Can anyone please recommend one which will do the job?

Hi peahouse - just replied over at your crunching post, but as V_R said this is better here

You are better off just getting a DVD-RW (re-writer) as it will do everything (play CD/DVD's and write CD/DVD's)

If you are looking at doing disc-to-disc copying then get a DVD-ROM as well (it just plays CD/DVDs)

Don't worry too much about the +/- thing - its to do with the DVD disc format - all modern DVD writers can play and write to both.

Everyone will have an opinion, but the best make is probably Plextor (more expensive though) but all the following do good ones Pioneer/NEC/LG.

I use an NEC ND-3550A - you can get one online for around £25 - its been excellent :thumb:

what 'e said ..........

No need to be confused ... just get a DVDRW -+ DL (dual-layer) and it will do it all ... £30 max

Oh, NOT a Sony ... we banned them from the forums. :p

No need for any software as Linux has the best writing software, K3B, for free. ;)

Thanks for that Guys.
Cheers,

Have ordered NEC ND 3550A from EBUYER for £29.45 inc delivery.
Thanks again!:D

Wow... my sympathies at the UK pricing. I just love the LG Dual Layer DVD's at 40.00 CDN or 19GBP. We go thru several cases of these a month. Not only are they +/- but a RAM format as well.

WHat is interesting is the preferences from country to country. In Eastern Canada the Drives of choice are LG and Samsung with nary a NEC or Sony to be seen.

As I said before Rudi - we get ripped off here.

I like LG too, and have a couple, but I just edge towards NEC - to be honest its all down to personal preference at these price levels.

Never tried a Samsung yet, but I've read a few good reviews - never touched a Sony either and probably never will.

I got my Sister who was in the USA last year to buy me some PC software & DVD films, the total cost came to £100. If bought in the UK the cheapest i could have got it for on-line would have been £350. Yes we get ripped off in the UK!!
