What is the path to the files for the cd burning program that is part of Win
XP Pro?

How do I open this program?

Supposedly, there is an icon I can put on my desktop to drag files to -
how do I find it and do this?

Not sure what the program is called, but....

..... you can just select the files you want to burn, right click->Send
To->CD Drive(X:) where X: is the drive letter of your CD writer.

Then, in Explorer, right click on the CD drive and select "Write these
files to CD"

The path to the location of the cache folder used by XP is here C:\Documents
and Settings\<logon user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD
Burning

both Local Settings and Application Data are hidden directories so you need
to have Show all files and folders enabled in the Folder Options->View. You
can simply create a shortcut to your CD Burner and when files are dropped on
it the message should appear in the systray telling you that you have files
waiting to be written to CD.

The only downside to that is if there is not a disk in the drive; you
get a pop-up with the searchlight animation saying it can't find D:\ (or
whatever letter your drive is). Using Send To->CD Drive on the context
menu queues the files in the cache folder you mentioned even if there is
not disk in the drive.

Yes it is generally helpful to put a CD into the drive if you are going to
burn files to C½í¹--

But only when you actually want to burn the disk :-)

The point I was making is that XP is slightly inconsistent. If you use
Send To, or drag and drop on to the CD drive in Explorer you don't need
a disk in the drive, it just caches the files, but if you drag and drop
to a Desktop shortcut it errors.

FWIW, I regularly send files to the CD writer on an /ad hoc/ basis. I
have a friend who only has 56K dial-up but I've got DSL so I d/l any
large files he needs. If I d/l something for myself and think he would
want it too, I just Send To CD Drive before installing it (so I don't
forget about it). Then at some point I'll put a disk in and burn them.

Thanks Harry - I am almost there -

#1 The path C:\Documents and Settings\<logon user>\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning
has been found - but there are no files in the CD Burning directory. And
yes, Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected. Apparently this directory
is just a holding cell (cache?) for files selected to be burned. But
somewhere I saw the Roxio name so there must be program files somewhere?

#2 Somewhere it mentioned a Desktop Icon to drag and drop files to - I find
no such icon or something to make a 'shortcut' of. If I take the above
Directory, CD Burning, and drag it to my desktop, it works fine as a cache,
but it is then missing from my C:\ drive directory in Explore. Not sure I
like this. Am I missing an icon

#3 Yes, I think putting in a disk when you want to record to a CD is a
great idea! Who sits up nights discovering these procedures. :)

why don't you invest in a real burning piece of software like Nero...learn
how to use it...in about 2 days...and be happy....

Aha - now we cut to the chase - I have seen Nero - and if it would take
the average person 2 days to figure it out - it would take me even longer.
Who has two days to learn how to burn a CD? - exactly what I am trying to
avoid here. From the little I have seen, the CD burning software in Win XP
is just fine for the little I want to do and I think I just about have it
figured out. [ Maybe another 6 hours :) ]
