Hello,
I'm using an Acer Aspire 1700, including a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-811. I'm able
to burn DVD -r, but since recently, I do not succeed to burn CDs anymore. In
the log, it states "#18 DVDR -400 File Writer.cpp, Line 331 SCSI Target error"
Any idea?
Thanks a lot,
Most drives that can burn DVDs and CDs have two different lasers. One for
each function. It's possible that the laser for burning CDs is out of
alignment but the DVD laser is still working and recording. Usually this
happens the other way around - the DVD laser quits first. You can send the
drive in to have the lasers realigned but with the price of drives these
days it is more cost effective to replace the drive instead.
If you have third party burning software installed (which you do since you
can burn DVDs), it may include a tool that tests the drive and reports what
functions are supported, working and not working. The info in the report
could help you to determine what state your drive is in. You may find that
replacement is unnecessary. That CD burning is working fine and that a
change in the brand of recordable disks or a change in burn speed settings
is all that's needed to burn CDs once again.
It also wouldn't hurt to check the specs on your DVDram drive. It would be
unusual but it's possible that it just reads CDs but doesn't burn them.
