CD and DVD Rom have left the building... (Device Manager)

I have been having this problem for about a month. Both my CD and DVD Rom
have disappeared from my Device Manager. I have done a search in the forums
and found some users with similar troubles, and I tried the fixes to no
avail. My wife and I had some visitors here from England a month ago, and
they plugged their iPods into my computer to charge them and to share some
music. I thought that maybe a driver was corrupted due to this, so I
restored my computer to a date prior to when our visitors came, again to no
avail. At one point, I was able to, in device manager, click 'search for
hardware changes' and the drives returned for about 3 days. However, this is
not even working now.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

BTW... I tried to do the following, but neither Upperfilters nor Lowerfilters
appear at this location in the registry...
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
[Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter]

2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and
the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD
recording software, you may need
to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software
vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

Ok, this post can be disregarded. The Secondary 0 device and Secondary 1
device had gotten disabled in my BIOS. I switched them both to 'Auto' and
everything is back to normal now.
