i wonder why they update so fast (they just did an update a few weeks ago)-
most companies at least wait a few months before they go and do an update.

CCleaner has updated to version v1.36.430

You may or may not want those CCleaner updates. Perhaps this list, along
with Anonymous Bob's detailing of the latest changes to CCleaner v1.36.430
will help you decide:
http://www.ccleaner.com/versions.aspx

As we've seen with the cleaning of Defender history and consequent loss of
the Defenders last scan information, as implemented in CCleaner v1.30.310,
not all changes are necessarily beneficial. It's up to you to decide if
you want the "improvements". Fortunately, as in the case of Defender
cleaning, many of the changes made from version to version in CCleaner can
be turned off if you so desire. Perhaps of interest to you is the added
cleaning of Avg Anti-Spyware in v1.34.407 that your missing by not having
the latest releases.

Adding to Dave's synopsis, the reason is one of program design. Unlike most
programs that require recent changes, ccleaner has no internal update system,
so each change or update to the registry that affects something ccleaner
monitors requires a corresponding new version of the program itself.

Unfortunately, this also means that issues like the one with Defender,
including plain simple mistakes, will also require a new program version to
supply the fix. Skimming through the version history Dave supplied the link
to shows the number of bug fixes and additions to supported applications far
out-number any changes to the program itself.

Undoubtedly, the program designer regretted the decision to use a monolithic
(all in one) program design by the time several releases had occured, but by
then it would have required a major re-write to fix permanently. The scary
part is that this is just about the best Registry Cleaner out there, bar a
couple commercial cleaners usually supplied in tool packs.

The sad part is that the idea of Registry Cleaning has done far more to
distribute malware to unsuspecting users than the few real useful programs
like ccleaner have provided true value, since most of it is so much window
washing that provides little real operating improvement.

I'm still using version v1.29.295 and it works just fine. Why would I want
to keep updating it?

E.g. to support cleaning of Internet Explorer 7, and many other newer
applications.

Thanks for the link Dave. Skimming down the list, I can't see any facilities
there that leave me feeling desperate to use - but then, I think I don't
understand why there would be a need to clean AVG antispyware. (I never
understood the need to clean Defender, for that matter.)

OK, you got me wondering as well... I ran the latest CCleaner without AVG
checked then reran it with the cleanup option for AVG. All CCleaner
removes additionally is the log file (note, I just this week replaced Ewido
with AVG so there's not much there at all):

C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\logfile.txt 584 bytes

I don't know if the facilities for the separate AVG Antispyware are
significantly different from the version bundled with the AVG Security suite,
Dave, but in the latter the log can be cleared with a single click of a
button - so the use of Ccleaner seems an unnecessary complication, perhaps?
