Hi,

I have to by a new hard disk. What would you suggest, WD Caviar, Segate
Bracuda or Hitachi. It will be SATA , 80 or 120Gb.

My list of citeria is:
-less heating
- realibility
- speed
- noise
- price

Thank you very much!

Best IMO: Samsung and Seagate. Seagate seems to run a bit
hotter. OTOH Seagate gives out 5 years warranty.

Hitachi is unreliable and sells the succesors to the "DeathStars"
that died in masses. No idea about WD, but I have been reading some
not to good things in this group.

Samsungs with the nidec motor are quiet, those with the jvc squeal a bit.
Your local store can ask their distributor to look at the one they're going
to send. It's a stamping or sticker by the spindle.
Or these online guys might do it:

Samsungs definitely run cool. In fact, it's a cold morning and mine is at
12C, while my new WD is at 29C and if I put it in the wrong bay with poor
ventilation it goes up to 39C, and probably more but I disconnected it then.
This was with normal ambient temps and the Samsung was at about 27C.

So, if you don't need the absolute fastest drive, a Samsung with nidec motor
would be great. They are super-quiet; they probably have the quietest seeks
of any, unless someone has caught up with them. They use a special algorithm
for the seeks. They are also adjustable to maximum speed or quietness, but
you'd better check to see that there's a utility for that on their web
site -- you might have to check with tech. support. Dtemp will tell you
where a particular drive is set, in the SMART section. But probably you'll
find it's not audible set at maximum performance; that's where mine was set
at the factory.

The samsung leaves the rest for dead on noise, so quiet
you have to check carefully that its actually spun up even
with the covers off the case with a very quiet case.
