Okay, I have to be missing something primally basic here. So basic that
even a newsgroup search didn't turn up an answer.

I have my contacts assigned to categories. I'm looking at "Detailed
Card View" in my contact list. How, simply, can I tell Outlook "just
show me contacts in category xxxx?"

I know I can create and apply a filter. But sheesh, that's pretty
involved for a simple "show me just my personal list." I'm sure I'm
missing something basic. Even on my PocketPC, there's a drop downlist
that shows categories and ALL. If I want to "filter", I drop down the
list and click on the category. Clicking ALL brings me back to
everything.

I'm sure I can do this in OL2003 as easily. So I must be suffering from
some sort of brain vacation.
 
Don't just filter the current view. Create a new view that filters for
category X. And another one for category Y. You'll need to set each view up
just once and can then can invoke it whenever you want.
