Catch 22 with Defender?

I just downloaded a program from the "Microsoft Store" (not sure thats the
correct name) and it of course came via the digitalrivers.com site. Their
proceedure apparently is to complete most of the installation then go get the
"activation key".
Of course, Defender does its job and blocks that attempt and gives the
proper notification and the options of keep blocking or allow.
Now comes the rub, choosing allow does not make an entry in allowed programs
listing. Probably because the program really is not installed yet but rather
is sitting in a temp folder awaiting completion of installation.
I have tried entering the program into the allowed listing manually by
referencing it back to the temp folder. This did not have any apparent
effect.
Of course there is no apparent way to get the key except electronically from
Digital Rivers. Their web site is absolutely no help with their 3 little
FAQs.
I really hate to turn defender off but is that the only way?

Turning it off temporarily might be what's required.

I'd love to be able to get a clear set of reproduction steps for the
Defender developers, though.

Can you give the URL for the "store" (was this Windows Marketplace??) and
the product--so someone else can go through the same steps and see what
happens?

As a minimum, I'd think that Microsoft would want to assure the success of
the Marketplace process by getting it to move to a method that doesn't get
blocked.

I ordered Microsoft Money 2007 from the Microsoft.com/money web site but I
think that redirects you to store.digitalriver.com. After about 3 hours of
screwing around trying everything I could come up with I did finally go ahead
and bite the bullet and disabled Defender.

I am not too upset, at least I know how hard it is to change the allowed
programs list.

Thank you for your quick reply. I really do appreciate it.

Yes--that's just what it does--I can get as far as the store, but I think
I'm not going to put in credit card details just yet.

I'm not sure whether I'll be able to get anybody to look at this or not, but
it seems worth a try.

Thanks for the report---sorry for the difficulties!

FWIW, I think this is a pretty sleazy sales operation--the pricing is all
shown with a rebate, and there's a "details" button to get more information
about the rebate but NONE of those details buttons, including the one at the
store--actually give elegibility information about the rebate. I own a
number of previous versions of Microsoft Money, but I didn't actually pay
cash for some of them. I do have boxes, manuals, and media, though, or did
once. So--I have no idea whether I'm eligible for the rebates offered, and
neither Microsoft nor Digital River is about to tell me.

I just read the pdf doc that came with the download (actually two seperate
downloads but on same reciept) and it makes no mention of needing anything
except proof of purchase (email received when purchasing product). You have
30 days from that date to get the rebate form to them.

That sounds good. Abput every 3 years or so I go out and get a new copy of
Money on the theory that it will encourage me to actually enter the data and
USE it. So far, that strategy has not worked.....

You must not be married. I buy a license every couple of years (just like
clockwork) and leave that Money 200x stuff to her. At least I *THINK* that
she uses it. Then again, she may employ your strategy. ;-)

On a completely irrelvent note to this thread ... (as if the above had
anything to do with it) ...

I just went through a second series of OneCare/Defender/.NET fiascoes.
Defender has performed admirably, but OneCare was unable to be updated or
reinstalled. I had to delete and reinstall .NET (again) and perform a series
of maintenence patches. OneCare is finally "green" once again. ;-)

Let me know if these procedures might be useful, and I will email them
offline.

Scott,

Since you mentioned OneCare/Defender, I'm assuming you performed an install
of the OneCare 1.1 version, since Defender is a separate install in that
version?

Since the Windows OneCare v1.5 Beta version is now available, it won't be
too long until that version replaces the older 1.1 for all current
suscribers. Though the .NET 2.0 will still be required, Defender is replaced
(or disabled in Vista), since the core services are now included in OneCare
v1.5 itself and controlled by its GUI. In fact, the antivirus/antispyware
scanning controls are merged and performed together for both scheduled and
manual scans.

We occasionally see significant problems with updates, though they're
generally due to legacy issues from previous antimalware/firewall on the PC.
Did you post this info over in the WLOC forums? I don't know what value it
has here, but that's where the problems with WLOC updates and .NET occur on a
fairly regular basis.

Bitman (OneCareBear)

Now that .NET is properly re-re-reinstalled, OneCare installed as:

UI Version 1.1.1067.8
AV definition 1.10.1728.4
Firewall Policy 1.2.2/50

(utterly irrelevent to this thread BTW)

.... and Defender is currently ...

UI Version 1.1.1347.0
Engine 1.1.1603.0
Definition 1.14.1727.5

.... which Engel has undoubtedly posted already. ;-)
