Hi,

I have a problem with one of my win2000 servers. The disk space is
running low (400MB). The server is not running as a web server, however
it has an Inetpub folder off the root of the system drive, C:
There are several subfolders to this folder, one of them is called
Catalog.wci and is over 1GB in size. The latest modification date of
these files is about 8 weeks ago.

Would anyone briefly tell me what these files are, and what would be the
consequences of moving or deleting them?

Thanks in advance for your help,

SW

When I Google for: catalog.wci I get plenty of links.

Have you tried?

Yes, I discovered that its part of the Indexing service. Being in the
Inetpub folder, I presume its some form of website index. However,
although Internet Information Services are running, the server isn't
used to serve web pages.
If I uninstalled IIS, would that remove these catalog files? Are they
used for anything else?
If I uninstalled IIS, would I need to reboot the server?

Thanks for your help,

So until 8 weeks ago the services were in use? What activity was stopped
then?

I don't really know IIS other than that it can also be used for internet
sharing in a simple (XP?) network.

To see whether it has not been used for a long(er) time, you should check
whether there are any files in the IIS sphere that have recent date stamps.
And that for the whole network.
If not, it seems you might deactivate/delete the service.

You could collect more details by Googling for: what is iis

After about 1 to 2 hours reading on Internet and help files on the
server I decided that my problem was:
Index server had been installed by default with W2000 server.
I didn't need it, I wasn't using it.

My best solution was to stop the Index server service and change the
startup type to Manual, then delete the catalogs, using the Index
Service management tool in the MMC.
I now have 4GB free instead of 400MB. That's a MASSIVE improvement!
I have no indexing service running but its there if I need it.
Life goes on!

Best Regards,
SW

OK, glad you solved it!

Amazing how much space an unnecessary service eats away.
