Catalog-up-dates ?

I want to down-load some up-date from the Windows Catalog
but when I went to download them it asked me what folder
I wanted to put them in.
The downloads were-Directx-9 & Windows Media.
How I'm I suppose to know where they go?
Most times, well all the time when I'd download from
Windows up-date the Up-date site put the download where
it belonged.
Just where does DirectX-9 go?
No smart remarks - we are all "new users" at this news-
group.
I would think these up-dates would go in a system file or
a program file (but what program?) not desktop, documents
ot Computer C/ or D/ those were the only options for
download.
One more question-Why are these downloads from Catalog
not automatic, like the other up-dates?

If you are downloading from the Catalog, NONE of the updates there are
"automatic". You are downloading the update for future use. When you RUN
the update, it should automatically install where it needs to be..

Windows Update.. "Scan for Updates"

If you are going to the Windows Update Catalog, that allows you to download
the updates for future use. It does (or should) not install anything. You
are simply telling it where to SAVE the file.

Now, if you ARE using the first option and it is asking you this question -
you got me. Was automatic for the many machines I have done it on. What is
the exactl method you are using to get to this point?
 
You can download to any folder of your choice, once the download is finished,
double-click the file and it will install. Some downloads are stand alone
applications; not integrated with Windows or Office or the Internet Explorer.

in Desktop folder. When I went to open it it did nothing
but show me the file in the folder. Is this what it
should do?

which file to down-load to.
To answer our question I go to the Windows up-date site
then on the right hand side there's Window Catalog up-
dates. On the next page it shows up-dates. Then I scool
down to Windows Updates for Windows XP SP1.
I don't understand? Should an up-date go to a certain
file.
If I don't get an answer here I'll repost it later in a
new post.

I've up-dated from here before and never had to put

To answer our question I go to the Windows up-date site
then on the right hand side there's Window Catalog up-
dates. On the next page it shows up-dates. Then I scool
down to Windows Updates for Windows XP SP1.

First - your question..

Yes - if you used "Windows Update Catalog" and found the updates instead of
SCANNING your machine for them - yes. It downloads and saves them where
ever you tell it to for future installation. You then have to manually run
them. I think you are doing something different than you did before...
Read below.


You should not click on the "Windows Catalog" link UNLESS you want to
download the updates and burn them to CD or store elsewhere for later
installation. (Or if something has gone wrong and you need to re-install a
corrupted installation.)

If you are just trying to update, go to:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Click on "Pick Updates to Install" (left side menu) or "Scan for Updates" on
the right hand side.. Then after it scans your machine, you can see, by
browsing through the left hand menu, what updates you need inthe right hand
side.. You can (after selecting the ones you want) Choose to "Review and
Install updates".

That - I believe - is what you want.
