cat5 vs cat6

Am thinking about installing some 1 gigabit switches. The switch
manufactures claim they work over cat5 wire. Is the speed restricted with
cat5 wire? Do you also need to replace the patch panels to cat5e or cat6?
 
I am using a gigabit switch with two gigabit PCs with normal Cat5e cables
with no problems, but these are short-run (less than three meters) cables.
For any distance you will likely need to use Cat6 equipment.

Must be CAT5e or CAT6. CAT5 will not work..

Must be CAT5e or CAT6. CAT5 will not work..

Wrong, CAT5 supports gig without any problem. It's always worked over
CAT5.
